New Life Blog

Getting Started (Again)

You probably noticed (if you have been paying attention) that there has been a flurry of activity on the digital doorstep of New Life Alliance Church. Not only a good bit of activity on our Facebook page but our website looks completely different. As we continue to enhance our digital presence some additions and enhancements are being made. I would like to announce one of those today.

As part of our church website you will now be able to access a new church blog. We will be publishing to it regularly (at least on a weekly basis). If it is easier to get to it through Facebook we will announce when a new post has been published and provide a link. On a regular basis the contributors will be Kenny, Pastor Dave, and Pastor Jeff. If someone in the church has a penchant for writing and would like to contribute a guest post, please speak with Pastor Jeff or send the post to pastorjeff@nlacnewark.org.

If you have never interacted with a blog allow me to point out that the power of the blog is just that—interaction. At the end of a post there will be a place to comment which permits a conversation to ensue. We hope that you will not only check out the blog, but share it and interact with it. See you in the blogosphere.

**Please note, the comment’s section is currently filtering out the comment’s author name. We are waiting for a backend update to display all the information. In the meantime, feel free to add your name in the text. Thanks, Kenny

Prejudice in the Pew

The rather evocative title employed here most likely brings to mind a gathering akin to Westboro Baptist Church. Their unbiblical and indefensible behavior has made them worthy of such a description. But it remains true in most of the American church world that from 11:00-12:00 on Sunday morning remains the most segregated hour of the […]

Jesus Among Secular Gods

The latest book coming from the pen of Ravi Zacharias is co-authored by Ravi and fellow RZIM apologist Vince Vitale. And if this volume is any indication, we will be hearing a lot more from Dr. Vitale. While similar in title to the 2000 Zacharias release, Jesus Among Other Gods, the content is significantly different. […]

Mere Mortals

One of my favorite quotes from C.S. Lewis (and there are so many) comes from his collection of essays, The Weight of Glory: “There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations – these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a […]

Vision and Being Able To See

Helen Keller famously said, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.” When it comes to leadership we often think of vision as a view of a preferred future. That is not a bad definition—not exhaustive but accurate nonetheless. Whenever I have candidated at a new church with the possibility […]

A.B. Simpson and Race

Albert Benjamin Simpson (Bert) was the founder of The Christian and Missionary Alliance, of which New Life Alliance is a part. Simpson, was Canadian, born on Prince Edward Island. He was raised just outside of Chatham, Ontario, the “last stop” on the Ohio branch of the famed Underground Railroad. Brave, God-fearing citizens helped fugitive slaves […]

On A Mission to Read

You have probably already picked up that I love to read and while I enjoy books “across the board,” there are those times that call for perusing a more specific title. We are just about a month away from our annual Missions Emphasis here at New Life. I have tried to make a habit […]

“History Put On Hold”

Those were the words spoken, the stark statement by the writer: “History has been put on hold.” This comment referenced the fact that America had failed to elect the first female president; a historical inevitability had been postponed by the ill-informed electorate. Such a remark about history’s having to wait spotlights a way of […]

“But How’s the Foundation?”

Ravi Zacharias tells the story about going to speak at Ohio State University. As they passed the newly completely Wexner Center for the Arts the driver described this edifice as “one of the first post-modern buildings in America.” When asked to explain the driver pointed out there were pillars which held nothing up and stairs […]

Starting 2017

Like many I started 2017 doing a personal mental recap of 2016. The past year was another transition year for me. Full of changes and new experiences. Some were fun and happy, others were challenging and sleep depriving. I am grateful for all I learned. As I look back, I recall those moments that were […]

What Should I Read Next?

Every once in a while I will have someone in a church ask me about a book recommendation. Being an avid reader I have numerous favorite books and yet I realize that people’s reading tastes can be quite varied. I am also a bit of a collector of reading lists. So what I have put […]

The Best Christmas Ever

When our family gets together at Christmas, we eventually start remembering good times in Brazil. And after 50 plus years of marriage and three middle-aged sons (how did that happen?), we have a lot of memories. So somebody will say, “Remember Barra Velha?”And everybody smiles and says, “Oh yeah.” Now for some context. We’re talking […]

Christianity Lite

I recently received an order from a pretty well-known evangelical mail order company that provides all kinds of books and supplies to individuals and churches. As I was unpacking the boxes I noticed the slogan printed on each of the packages, and while I am sure they meant nothing theological by it, the wording struck […]
