On A Mission to Read

You have probably already picked up that I love to read and while I enjoy books “across the board,” there are those times that call for perusing a more specific title. We are just about a month away from our annual Missions Emphasis here at New Life. I have tried to make a habit through the years to practice some soul and mind preparation for that very important time in our church calendar by reading a missionary biography.

If this sounds like something that might be of interest to you, allow me to make some suggestions. Some of these are classics that have developed a following through the years while others are not quite as well known but nonetheless worth some serious attention.

What follows are some ideas in no particular order with a little explanation to help in your decision making.

A Chance to Die, Elizabeth Elliot—This is a rather ambitious read. It is the story of famed missionary to India, Amy Carmichael. Wonderfully written, it will challenge every idea you might have about discipleship.

Through Gates of Splendor, Elizabeth Elliot—Staying with the late author, this is the riveting tale of Jim Elliot and his four companions who died martyr’s deaths opening the door for the gospel to go the Wadani people of the jungles of Ecuador.

Jungle Pilot, Russell T. Hitt—Excellent biography of Nate Saint who served as the pilot for Jim Elliot and his four friends. If you enjoy stories of missionary aviation this is one you will love.

Evidence Not Seen, Darlene Deibler Rose—One of my absolute favorites. This story follows this heroic women into New Guinea working with C & MA missionary statesman Robert Jaffrey and then into a Japanese POW camp. This is one that will strengthen your faith.

Two books from the Jaffrey missionary series that I would highlight (even though they are all quite good) are On Call by medical doctor David Thompson and Weak Thing in Moni Land which is the story of Bill and Gracie Cutts.

Let the Nations Be Glad, John Piper—This is not a biography—it is more like a theology of missions. If you want to go a bit deeper in your understanding of missions this is a great resource to go to.

Feel free to ask me about any of these books or even some other suggestions if none of these strike your fancy. Let me assure you that this will be a great way to prepare your heart for the days ahead.
